She is an Astronomer: Are women under-represented in your institution?
Jacqueline Otaguro: Of the faculty listed solely as Astronomy (versus, Physics and Astronomy), 5 are women and 6 are men. This is a pretty good female representation for the Astronomy department. However, looking at combined Physics and Astronomy, however, the ratio drops to 8 women, 21 men. While astronomy seems to be a field well represented by women (at least at The University of Western Ontario), physics is still largely dominated by men.
SIAA: Have you had any career breaks?
JO: I have not taken any appreciable breaks since starting my undergraduate degree at McMaster University back in 2003. Most summers were spent either working full- or part-time jobs to help pay for tuition, or working for a professor in the Physics & Astronomy department. Between finishing my H.B.Sc. at McMaster, I had a full one week off before trekking over to The University of Western Ontario to start my M.Sc. degree. I am now in my 2nd year of Ph.D. studies and am realizing that perhaps a vacation of some sort is in order. Maybe a tropical island somewhere...
