She is an Astronomer: How many years since you got your maximum academic degree?

Yolanda Gomez: 18 years.


SIAA: Do you feel that it was more difficult for you to get a job or a promotion in comparison with male astronomers?

YG: No, at that moment when I got my job it was not difficult.


SIAA: Are women under-represented in your institution?

YG: We are about 30% women in the center where I work (CRyA-UNAM).

SIAA: What's your family status?

YG: Married. I live with my husband and two children.


SIAA: Have you had career breaks?

YG: Only when my son was born. I was a student so I took a six months break.



SIAA: How many hours per day do you normally dedicate to work?

YG: About 8 hours per day and some times I work on weekends.


SIAA: What would most help you advance your career?

YG: I really love my research in astronomy. I also have a husband who supports me.


SIAA: What recommendation would you make to young women starting their career in astronomy?

YG: To do what they like the most.
